What are the best paid jobs?

The Dutch weekly magazine Elsevier publishes an annual special issue on careers. It contains a list of 257 occupations: which ones pay the most and which ones pay the least. At the top of the list is Chairman of a Board of Directors, earning about 496.000 Euros a year. The job of stocking shelves in a supermarket is at the bottom of the list, earning a maximum of 20.000 Euros per year.

College versus University

Academics (master level) generally earn more than college graduates (bachelor level), but the gap is getting smaller. The average net monthly income of a university graduate is 1,687 Euros at a working week of 37 hours, and that of a college graduate is 1,368 Euros on average.

Sectors

The general picture is that the highest paid professions are in these four areas: economics, legal services, technology and health. People working in the fiscal sector, information technology, medicine and mechanical engineers also have no reason to complain.

Dentists have been earning a lot for a very long time. They work an average of 31 hours per week and earn 3,025 Euros net per month. This is 40% more than econometrists, who are number 2 on the list.

Technical Business Administration is the highest paid profession for college level. A starter on the job market with this training earns an average of 1,650 Euros, compared to an average starting salary of 1,368 Euros for all college graduates.

Salaries are the lowest in the creative and social sectors. People working in, for example, an artistic profession or as a educationalist, earn the least. Dancers earn an average of 800 Euros net per month. This is at the level of welfare support.

People working in the science sector, such as biologists or chemists, earn considerably less than engineers. Also those in humanities and social science do not earn a fat salary, but on the other hand, they have an average working week of only 32 hours.

Education

The research by Elsevier doesn't just cover professions, but also compares several educational courses. The magazine presents a list of studies that are recommended if you want a very well paid job. The top ranking courses are the following:

  1. Dentistry

  2. Econometrics

  3. Fiscal Economics

  4. Tax Law

  5. Medicine

  6. Mechanical Engineering

  7. Technical Business Administration

  8. Information Technology

  9. Business Administration

  10. Pharmacy

Conclusion

In short, if you want to earn a lot of money, choose a technical or economic education. But remember that this kind of jobs demands long hours of hard work every week. Tax lawyers are the champions in making overtime. But then you do get a nice company car in addition to a big salary.
